“There she was: So pretty, so beautiful; her blonde hair glowing in the sunlight right along with her bright, beaming smile. It was almost a cliché, as she seemed to be running through a field, or a garden, laughing the whole time. The infectious giddiness and the graceful elegance of the whole scene was definitely a sight to behold. It made Brandon want to puke.”

A story chronicling the rebellion and salvation of a young man named Brandon, Kyle D. Garrett’s first novel, Coma, California, will leave Christian readers cheering in their pews over the wondrous redemption of another lost soul, albeit a fictional one. This fictional story will remind Christian readers of real-life testimonies they have heard of in which sad, stubborn souls have found faith and forgiveness.
Things I liked—the purposeful attempt to create characters that are raw. The character of Myles brought tears to my eyes. He was beautifully drawn. I liked Brandon’s back story and the emotional connection it drew. Also, the author throws in moments of snarky wit that I enjoyed, such as the quote above. Another devise that was utilized well was giving the reader a slow reveal of the cause for Brandon’s angst by taking short jaunts into the past. The best part of the novel is how Mr. Garrett describes the plan of salvation near the end of the story. It is theologically sound and compassionate, a brief but vital scene. Salvation is presented as an irresistible invitation and offers great hope, both to the characters involved and to the reader. But then, I do love a good sermon.
Things I disliked—Brandon. I know I’m supposed to dislike him at first—he must grow as a character—but Brandon wore out my empathy in the first scene, in which he takes a nap after arguing with himself about taking a nap, and he never really wins it back. His character does develop, but that posed other problems for me. Early confessions of deep love between the two main characters set the pacing of the story off and confused me. The last aspect of the novel that was jarring was the repetitiveness in the “telling” scenes as opposed to the quite enjoyable movement in the “showing” scenes.
Writing is a marathon-style adventure and Kyle D. Garrett is off to the races with a solid first run.

Coma California edition by Kyle D Garrett Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
As I put message and heart above literary precision, this book was wonderful. I cried and laughed. I hurt with the characters, and then celebrated with them as they found redemption. For a first novel, Kyle has shown he's got a heart and message that young adults really need. I'd love to read a revised version after a professional editor has polished and tightened it up. This message should be shared with anyone struggling with loss and despair.
What makes a novel memorable for me are a good story with characters that have content. Coma, California is a story of forgiveness and redemption with an interesting twist -- suggested by the title. It has an interesting story-line with eternal value because, in the end, God is glorified. There is a diverse cast of characters -- some lovable, others not so lovable -- but all redeemable. It is a story of transformation that has merit. This is K. G.'s first novel. I encourage him to keep writing. I am a professional writer (not a novel writer) and I would pass on one constructive critical tip. One of the hardest lessons I had to learn in the beginning was that "less is more." A thorough editing of this to polish and tighten the text would make it an even better story. Keep going, Kyle...you're off to a good start.
You must know, Kyle did EVERYTHING on this book. No agent. No editor. No marketing team. This is all him. That's why the story is so great, because its in a very raw form. Through the pages you get an intimate glimpse of his knack for descriptive writing. He's incredibly good at immersing the reader and their five senses into the story. Sometimes it may seem a bit much, a bit rough around the edges-but still a beautiful story with a purpose. This isn't a bunch of fluff between the covers, there is a grand message here.
You get it all in the story of grace and hope and how we typically find it in the most unlikely of places. Jesus used parables to tell a story so we could easily find the truth-Kyle has done the same here, for the gospel. He has taken a story so familiar, so real, so relateable-only to direct our focus to the King.
This is to be celebrated, y'all! Kyle has not hid his talents in the ground, but instead, has used them to not only multiply, but to worship and praise our Lord. That's gets me excited! It also gets me excited to find a contemporary Christian author that isn't writing about an Amish girl, but that's another post.
I can only imagine the angst, anxiety, and excitement that comes from being so exposed and vulnerable when having others critique and analyze your art. I give Kyle's "Coma, California", a 4.5 out of 5 stars! There are some tweaks that need to be done, but that is totally expected from a debut, self-published novel. I will, without a doubt, read whatever this man puts forth. I can stand behind any author that writes from the heart like he does.

I enjoyed reading this book. It was well written with a nice story. Read it yourself and you'll be sure to recommend it to others. Kathi Lehnhard,

Kyle wrote this book in a way that reads so easily, (I'm not a reader) and makes these characters feel like you know them. The flow of the story, mixed with the influence of God, was extremely fluent and not corny or over the top at all. GET THIS BOOK!
