Legends are born with every war. The name Benjamin White was no exception to this fact. After the battle of Tel El Kebir in 1882, White went missing. The last evidence of him, were footprints leading away from a body in the desert.
Twenty years later, a soldier returns to find answers. Rumors lead him to an oasis, and to a man who may hold the answers to the ever growing mystery that is Benjamin White.

The Narrative of Benjamin White eBook Aaron Brinker

This short-story packs a lot of punch with a tale of lifetime friendship, the ultimate cost of war and unexpected loss. Benjamin White, Jacob and Jonathon are connected in a boundless way many of us might not understand.

A fateful moment when a soldier rushes in costs Jonathon his life, while his friends grieve and place the blame upon themselves. Karma comes calling with a man named Ammon and this is where the real story begins. Are we in a dream lost in the desert? Is any of this real?

A timeline of twenty years unravels as we find the truth of a journey through bereavement, searching for a reason to go on and what it means to do your duty in the face of moral questions of who is right and who is wrong. I was delighted with the depth of the internal narrative, as we moved to the oasis and discovered the truth.

The lines between life and death become a hazy mirage. In the salient voice of the narrator, we find our own struggle to move on, when as individuals we face the inevitable choices we must make to survive our own existence. Well done!

The Narrative of Benjamin White eBook Aaron Brinker Reviews

My only criticism as the reader would be to give the characters a little more back story. It's hard to feel invested in a character when you don't know much about them.
A very cohesive story told fully in a compact manner. Covers issues of survivors guilt and trauma in a personal and intimate manner. At some points the dialogue feels slightly modern, relative to setting, but this actually enables conversations which cover the theme of the story better than period language could have.
A hauntingly bitter-sweet short that explores friendship, war, loss and the intricacies of coming to terms... Thoughtfully and sensitively written there are subtle layers of mirage set amid its desert sands.
This is a great short story that has the fell of a much longer book due to the author's writing skills. As the author tells the story of a legend who disappeared, readers are taken down a road of mystery and suspense. I won't give away the story but I think readers of mystery, suspense and just a well told tale are going to want to pick this one up!
You had me at page one, nice job on this well written short. Great war scenes and the writer had me traveling along with him, right to the " wow I didn't see that one coming " ending. I really liked the characters in this book they had a true connection to each other.
The Narrative of Benjamin White is a heartwarming and clever look at the horrors of war through the eyes of brothers.  I was extremely impressed with the Author’s ability to illustrate the beauty of friendship and love in the most desperate of situations.  This book is so much more than a war story, I really enjoy getting to know the characters and the end is something special.
This book left me thinking about it long after I finished it. I was heartbroken in the beginning, sharing the incapacitating load of guilt carried by our main character. Not enough can be said of the horror and destruction that is guilt. If reason could only defeat the virus-like nature of the emotion, so many of us could walk away from trauma and tragedy so much healthier! Of course...I guess if reason had that much power over destructive emotions, we'd have far, far fewer wars, to begin with. As I continued to despair for the poor character in his self-imposed prison of misery, I was surprised and [pleasantly] distracted by a very unexpected twist in the story. Very clever!
